The Importance of Being Earnest – Muhlenberg College

Sept. 26-29, 2019

by Oscar Wilde
Directed by Jim VanValen
Faculty Spotlight Performance: Holly Cate

First performed in 1895, Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest continues to be one of the most popular and performed comedies of the modern stage. In this production, Wilde’s much loved masterpiece is celebrated with cutting wit, deadpan ludicrousness, and a dubious fervor for all things “Bunbury” — performed entirely by an acting company of women. Following the adventures of two stylish young bachelors leading double lives to win hearts (or maybe break them), the play rollicks from London to the English countryside, with secret identities, capacious handbags, a controversial supply of cucumber sandwiches, and a sparklingly posh but surprisingly deep search for the “vital importance of Being Earnest.”
